Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro ~ October 1952
While working on the VHF survey, Gordon decided to climb to the top of Kilimanjaro during his local leave. When he was on the summit (October 22), the State of Emergency was declared in Kenya by the Governor (Sir Evelyn Baring) and martial law was imposed because of civil unrest. The Kikuyu tribe was split into two factions: loyalists who supported the colonial government and Mau Mau insurgents who wanted to overturn the white-controlled government and drive the settlers from the land.
