trained at the Liverpool Wireless College (1936/37), and was employed for the majority of
his sea time by the New Zealand Shipping Company. He served on Camaronia, Alaunia,
Andania, Goodwin, Antenor, Oxfordshire, Rotorua,
Cornwall, and Suffolk. After the war, he spend two years in New Zealand as a Radio Officer on flying boats plying between New Zealand and Australia. He returned to the UK and worked at Portishead Radio until his retirement. *** Robbie Roberts also trained at the Liverpool Wireless college. He was employed by the Marconi Co. on his first two ships, and then with I.M R., until sent on loan to the Admiralty to attend a course in H/F D/F in 1942. He then sailed as H/F D/F officer on Cainvalona and three Rescue Ships until the war ended. He served on Southern Princess, City of Newcastle, Dolabella, Donax, and Cairnvalona, and on the Rescue Ships Bury, Goodwin, and Fastnet. After the war, he sailed on Thomas Holt for one trip to West Coast of Africa. Considering the number of ships that there were in those days, it is remarkable that Robbie should join the Goodwin in1944 when she was a Rescue Ship, some six years after his brother left her, when she was sailing around the UK coast as a passenger ship (Clyde Shipping Co.). *** In 1947, Robbie joined what was then the Post Office telephone engineers, and later bought a sub post office, where he remained until retirement.
