Sea Gallantry Medal

The Sea Gallantry Medal was originally intended to reward foreigners who rendered assistance to British subjects in distress at sea, and this is now known as the Sea Gallantry Medal (Foreign Services). Later a separate form of the medal was introduced to reward British subjects in similar circumstances as for the foreign services version, and is known simply as the Sea Gallantry Medal.

The above information has been researched by Bernard de Neumann and George Monk. The authors are attempting to collate MN awards with the deeds. The complete paper has not been published because there are still some gaps and conflicting information, particularly regarding the citations and number of awards given. The authors started from a list of awards given in The Red Duster at War by John Slader (Wm. Kimber, 1988), but the numbers don't tie up. Anyone having more information, or wanting to have more details, should contact the authors.

During WW II, citations for some awards were censored. Perhaps one reason was the following incident which occurred during the First World War. Evidently, a Merchant Navy Master, Capt. Fryatt of the Great Eastern Railway Company's Brussels, was captured and shot by the Germans as a Franc Tireur for twice attempting to ram U-boats. On each occasion he had received a great deal of attention from the press, and so the Germans lay in wait for his ship, stopped it and boarded it, and arrested him. He was tried and sentenced to death.
