Merchant Navy Radio Officers

     We would like to invite all Merchant Navy Radio Officers, particularly those who served in World War Two, to tell us their experiences for inclusion on the web site. Please send your information (and a photo, if you have one) to webmaster (but notify us first before sending an attachment). This page is a tribute to the young men, many as young as fourteen, who went to sea as Radio Officers in World War Two, and to honour the 1,408 British Radio Officers killed in that war.
     According to the Radio Officers' Association, the first "wireless operators" went to sea in 1900, and played a vital role in the ship's safety. A hundred years later, with the advent of satellite systems, there is a global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS) and Morse code is a thing of the past.
