Gabriel Almond was the Master of the Empire Wagtail. Gabriel was born in South Shields on 14th June 1890, and came from a seafaring family. This photograph of him in his uniform as a Master Mariner was taken sometime after the start of WW II. Photograph provided by his nephew Colin Campbell.

William Edward (Ted) Mason, with his wife Doris Annie Mason. Ted was one of the DEMS gunners assigned to the Empire Wagtail. He had previously served on the Athlone Castle and Stalowa Wola (a Polish ship). Photograph provided by his grandson Glyn Mason

Maurice Allington was a gunner on board Empire Wagtail. He had tried to join the navy before he was old enough without his parents' knowledge or consent. He later trained as a DEMS gunner at HMS President III. Photograph supplied by his niece Joy Fuger.
