MV Luling (South Shields)

The Luling had sailed early in March, 1945 from South Shields, to Trincomalee, where the tanker was to join a naval assault force for the Malayan beachhead landings. En route, they encountered a typhoon with heavy seas in the Indian Ocean. One of the seaman, Tommy, was swept overboard. The ship dropped out of the convoy and pattern-searched the seas for six hours, but he was never found. The accident happened on Friday, April 27, 1945, in the Indian Ocean, and is described in The Sampan Girl
