After independence and the break up of the East Africa community in 1977, EAP&T became KP&T (Kenya Posts and Telecommunications company). It had monopoly on the telecommunications sector up to around 1997. During this time, it was the sole provider of international telecommunications to Kenya. This was through the Longonot earth station. All ISPs and telecoms providers had to use KP&TC to connect to the outside world.

The service was very poor and private telecoms providers formed a body called TESPOK (Telecommunications Service Providers Of Kenya www.tespok.co.ke). This body pressured the movement to liberalize the telecoms sector and allow other players in to the field. The government gave in and in the process split KP&TC into three bodies, Telkom Kenya, Posta Kenya and the communications commission of Kenya (CCK), Telkom was the telecoms arm, Posta was the mail and postage arm while CCK was the regulatory body.
