Usambaras - Past & Present

Slide 17: In the 1950s, this was a rural area, with one shop and a mud hut at the junction. Local residents called it "Magamba Gap" because the road passed between two tall banks of earth just before the top of the escarpment. By the 1960s, the earth banks were gone.

Just beyond the Y-junction, there is a most marvellous view of the valley. The road forks, with each road going downhill for the next three or four miles before going uphill again. John's story (Magamba), describes the area in the 1950s.

Today there is a small roundabout at the Y-junction, a lot of road signs, and a thriving small village with about thirty houses and a church.
