Photographs of the Usambaras

Usambaras

Yesterday & Today

When travelling to the coast from Nairobi forty or fifty years ago, travellers between Nairobi and Mombasa would break their journey at Mac's Inn in Mtito Andei or at Voi. Sometimes they would stay there for several days and tour Tsavo National Park.

For travellers between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, the favourite place for a stopover (overnight or longer) was the Usambaras. The travellers from the north would usually leave the main highway at Moshi, and travel up into the Usambaras, while travellers from Dar es Salaam would take the Bagamoyo Road from Dar es Salaam to Korogwe and beyond. They would stop en route to see the Soni Falls or take in the view of the sisal plantations on the Masai Steppes below.

There were several well-known boarding schools in this part of Tanganyika, including Kongwa School and the Lushoto Preparatory School.

From the Mombo turnoff, it is approximately 20 miles to Lushoto, and another 5 miles to Magamba. From Magamba, it is 15 miles to Mlalo and 20 miles to Shume.

Below is the photographic record of the journey taken by John Macintyre to see his childhood home in Magamba (Tanzania) and his school (Lushoto Preparatory School). Click on individual photos for an enlarged view and additional informaton.
