Welcome to African Adventures Visitor's Comments

Some mail we've received . .

I lived in Kenya as a child in the 1950s and then went to sea in the 1970s. ... If I may comment. I feel that I should have read The Black Pit first, and then read the others in date order. I have read Gordon's books, and the quality of writing is a high standard. The books are a story that could apply to many men of Gordon's generation. The books together are really the tale of a 20th century man. Rolande T.

Thank you for creating a site for our old memories. Chris

Sante sana na kwaheri- keep up the great work. Norman

Living in and growing up in Kenya held about the happiest memories a child could have. My whole family have the fondest feelings for Kenya, our friends and our life there.... I do think that there is a real truth to the saying that Africa holds everyone who has ever gone there. It is a wonderful and intense place to live, and it teaches you about life in a way that you can't possibly learn about anywhere else. Nedra

I thought I would give you an update on my search for my grandfather's farm which you so kindly posted on your website. I was eventually put in touch with Tim H. With his help I was able to trace the son of one of my grandfather's neighbours.... so I was extremely pleased that my search was successful and I was given other valuable information to add to my family history. Thank you for your help and suggestions which started me on the right path to completing the search. Brian V.

I would like to track down a good friend of mine (name omitted) who also went to Nairobi Primary and continued at the school after I left. I have managed to identify him on some of the early photos of students, and would appreciate any assistance in tracking him down. Peter

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your web site and the lovely memories it brought back. We lived in Kenya for 20 years (1953-73). ... I have managed to find out about some friends via your website. Thanks. Carole (Dunlop) Wilson..

I still remember the "East African Safari Rally" as it was then called. the VWs, Mercedes, Ford, Saab in the late fifties and early sixties. Holidays spent in Mombasa and many weekend trips in the countryside. The best adventure was by car from Nairobi to Cape Town ( Morris Oxford-and then with the Beetle VW) on non-tarmac roads some 3000 plus miles-one way, a truly wonderful experience. Very fortunate to spend one's childhood in such a wonderful part of Africa. Roger Ingham.

What sheer nostalgia this web site produces. I served with the Staffordshire Regiment and completed two tours in Kenya. My daughter attended Kenya Girls' High School, 1962-64. As for the fishing, it was sheer heaven. Ray Ironmonger

My father worked out of Mombasa in 1957/58 for the PWD as a paymaster on the Mombasa/Nairobi Road. I was only a child but we enjoyed going on working trips with him. We lived just south of the island across from the Likoni Ferry. I remember being taken to the Shelly Beach Hotel many times and staying at the Voi Hotel on many  of my father's trips. Rolande H.

Re NFD, Moyale, Marsabit: It's interesting to hear that someone knows about neglected parts of Kenya. I am kind of curious to find out what it was like in that part of Kenya before I was born. All I've heard so far are oral transitions and I would like to read about it. Humbe A..
